THE PHILOSOPHICAL AND EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION ON MOON WIDTH AND BRIGHTNESS AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH CRESCENT VISIBILITY AND PREDICTION CRITERIA IN ISLAMIC CALENDAR

The research is to investigate the use of the moon width for predicting the visibility of the lunar crescent to determine the beginning of the month in the Islamic Calendar. A review of the literature on the theoretical and practical aspects of determining the beginning of the lunar month and prediction of the visibility of the lunar crescent was carried out in this investigation. Data of moon sightings in Malaysia for 1972 to 2008 and 737 data from the International Crescent Observation Project (ICOP) was analyzed specifically for information on the moon width. Measurement on the moon width on photographs of the crescent 6 days before and after the conjunction was carried out. The photographs was recorded with a Nikon Coolpix 4500 camera attached to an ETX-70AT Auto telescope and the width was measured with Mira AP Astronomical Image Processing. It is concluded that the width of the crescent moon be adopted to augment the current Imkanur Rukyah criteria for predicting the visibility of the lunar crescent in Malaysia.
